Are You Setting a Godly Example for Your Children?

Whether your children are young and still living at home or grown with families of their own, your life continues to speak to them.

You can’t just talk the talk—you have to walk it before them. Your words matter, but the example you consistently live before them often leaves the deepest impression.

Children notice how you respond when life is hard. They see how you treat people who can’t do anything for you, whether you turn to God in prayer, obey His Word, forgive those who hurt you, and admit when you’re wrong.

What you live before them becomes a seed. Over time, that seed can produce a harvest in their lives and in generations yet to come.

Your Life Teaches Alongside Your Words

God instructed the people of Israel to teach His truth diligently to their children:

“And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children” (Deuteronomy 6:6–7).

Notice the order. God’s Word was first to be upon the parents’ hearts. Then they were to teach it to their children.

Biblical instruction is not merely information passed from one generation to another. It is truth received, believed, and lived.

You cannot faithfully teach your children to trust God while living as though everything depends on you. You cannot teach them to forgive while holding tightly to bitterness. You cannot teach them to value truth while excusing dishonesty in your own life.

This does not mean you must be a perfect parent. No parent is perfect. It means your children should see a sincere life of repentance, faith, obedience, and dependence on Jesus Christ.

The apostle Paul wrote, “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1).

That is the heart of a godly example. You are not asking your children to follow human perfection. You are showing them what it looks like to follow Christ.

Hidden Sin Never Remains Isolated

It is tempting to believe that a private sin affects only the person committing it. But sin rarely remains contained.

Secret addictions, dishonesty, uncontrolled anger, bitterness, sexual immorality, pride, and hypocrisy can shape the spiritual atmosphere of a home. Even when children do not know every detail, they often experience the fear, instability, distance, or broken trust that sin produces.

Numbers 14:18 declares:

“The LORD is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.”

This passage does not mean that children automatically bear their parents’ guilt before God. Scripture is clear: “The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father” (Ezekiel 18:20).

Each person is accountable to God for his or her own response to Him.

Yet the consequences and patterns of sin can reach far beyond one life. A parent’s sinful choices may wound a child, establish destructive habits, or make disobedience appear normal. Unless those patterns are confronted by God’s truth, they may be repeated from one generation to the next.

This is why repentance matters so deeply. By God’s grace, a destructive pattern does not have to become your family’s permanent story.

Repentance Is Part of a Godly Example

Setting a godly example does not mean hiding your failures. It means responding to them biblically.

When you sin, confess it to God. When you have wronged your child or another family member, ask for forgiveness. Do not defend what God calls sin. Do not blame someone else for your choices.

Scripture promises, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

Your children need to see that repentance is not merely feeling embarrassed or sorry about the consequences of sin. True repentance agrees with God, turns away from sin, and returns to obedient fellowship with Him.

A sincere apology from a parent can become a powerful lesson. Saying, “I was wrong. What I did was sinful. Will you forgive me?” does not weaken your authority. It demonstrates humility, integrity, and submission to Christ.

Your children may forget many of your conversations, but they are likely to remember whether your faith was genuine enough to lead you to repentance.

Jesus Christ Can Change Your Family’s Direction

Perhaps you recognize destructive patterns in your family. Maybe anger, addiction, abandonment, fear, or unbelief has been passed from one generation to another.

You are not without hope.

Jesus Christ came to save sinners and set people free from the dominion of sin. Through His death and resurrection, everyone who turns to Him in repentance and faith receives forgiveness, a new identity, and the power to walk in newness of life.

You are not saved by trying harder to become a better parent. Salvation is by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. But when Christ saves you, He begins transforming the way you think, speak, love, forgive, and lead.

The Holy Spirit will expose what needs to change, strengthen you to obey God’s Word, and produce His fruit in your life. Patterns that have endured for years can be confronted through truth, repentance, prayer, wise biblical counsel, and daily dependence on Christ.

You may not be able to change the past, but by God’s grace, you can begin sowing different seeds today.

Sow Seeds That Point Your Children to Christ

Your children need more than good behavior to imitate. They need to see that Jesus Christ is worthy of their whole lives.

Let them see you read and obey God’s Word. Let them hear you pray for wisdom and give thanks for God’s provision. Let them watch you choose truth when dishonesty would be easier. Let them see you forgive, serve, give generously, and remain faithful when circumstances are painful.

Speak openly about God’s faithfulness, but do not pretend that following Him removes every struggle. Show them how to bring fear, disappointment, temptation, and failure to the Lord.

Most importantly, make the Gospel clear. Your children are not saved because they were raised in a believing home or because their parents follow Jesus. They must personally turn from sin and trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

You can plant and water the seed of God’s Word, but only God gives the growth. Your responsibility is to live faithfully, pray continually, speak truth lovingly, and entrust the results to Him.

Begin With Your Own Heart

Ask the Lord to search your heart today.

Is there a sin you have excused? Is there a habit you have hidden? Is there someone you need to forgive or ask to forgive you? Is there an area of your home where your words and actions do not agree?

Bring it into the light before God.

Do not allow shame to drive you away from Him. Let conviction draw you to Jesus Christ, whose blood cleanses those who repent and believe. Receive His forgiveness, then take whatever obedient steps He places before you.

For your sake, and for the sake of your children, grandchildren, and generations to come, choose to walk in the light.

A godly legacy is not built through one impressive moment. It is formed through daily faithfulness—one prayer, one act of obedience, one confession, one forgiven offense, and one seed of truth at a time.

As you follow Christ, your life will show your children where lasting hope, freedom, and salvation are found.

A Prayer for Parents

Heavenly Father, search my heart and reveal anything that does not honor You. Forgive my sin, help me walk in truth, and make my life a faithful example of following Jesus. Give me wisdom to teach my children Your Word and humility to repent when I fail. May the seeds I sow point my family to Christ and produce a harvest of righteousness for generations to come. In Jesus’ name, amen.
