When We All Get to Heaven

Eliza Edmunds Hewitt was an invalid most of her life as the result of a serious spinal problem. But this did not weaken her faith or diminish her commitment to the Gospel. Born in Philadelphia on this day in 1851, she found fulfillment writing hymns.

Partly because of her health problems, she was sensitive to the difficulties people face on earth and looked forward to being with Jesus in Heaven where she could have a heavenly body. In 1898, she wrote a hymn that reflected this hope called “When We All Get to Heaven.”

She wrote, “Sing the wondrous love of Jesus, sing His mercy and His grace. In the mansions bright and blessèd he’ll prepare for us a place … When we all see Jesus, what a day of rejoicing that will be … We’ll sing and shout the victory!”

We may go through difficulties on earth, but we should serve Him every day, realizing that “just one glimpse of Him in glory will the toils of life repay.” We need to march “onward to the prize before us,” knowing that “Soon His beauty we’ll behold; soon the pearly gates will open; we shall tread the streets of gold.”

Today, remember that some day all of life’s struggles will be over, and you will spend eternity with Jesus. Don’t wait to celebrate. Right now, you can “sing and shout the victory!”
