What Is Constant

“Change is coming upon us so rapidly that only the young can fully comprehend it.” Words written in our time? No! In fact, they were written in 1853!

Looking back at that era, the world, to us, might seem somewhat primitive. Much remained to be discovered. Yet for those people, throughout the world, life was changing with remarkable advances such as the telegraph and railroads.

In our time, the rate of technological advances seems to accelerate, as we constantly are bombarded with new developments. But, as overwhelmed as we might feel, the quote from 1853 demonstrates that we are not the first generation to experience overwhelming change.

In some ways, this is the pattern of history. Some changes have had a revolutionary impact, welcomed by most. But some find change disturbing, making them feel uncomfortable, longing for the past. Change also can become an obsession, making us dissatisfied with the present, eager to adapt to what seems new.

Paul experienced this sensation when he visited Athens, where he observed that both local residents and “foreigners” spent “their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new” (Act 17:21). Because of this obsession with the new, their ears were closed to the truth.

In a world filled with constant change, it is important to remember that the Bible says “there is nothing new under the sun.” Yes, we may witness new developments. New products. New technologies. But the fundamental issues of life remain unchanged.

The Bible reminds us that God does not change (Malachi 3:6). That “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). That God is our rock and fortress. That we can find refuge in Him (Psalm 18:2).

Remember, build your life on the stability of the Rock.
