What Friends?

“She weeps bitterly in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks; she has no one to comfort her among all her lovers. All her friends have dealt treacherously with her; they have become her enemies.” – Lamentations 1:2 NASB

God’s people thought they had much to offer. They considered themselves to be wealthy, beautiful, attractive, and desirable. They felt confident in their relationships.

Then everything changed. Their wealth and assets diminished. Their beauty faded. They became weak and vulnerable. No longer so attractive, they were abandoned by those whom they thought had loved them. The promises that had been made were broken or forgotten.

Too late, they realized they had been fooled. Instead of having a genuine concern, their friends revealed they only were interested in what they could gain from the relationship. When convenient, they were willing to take advantage of God’s people, who were abandoned in their hour of need.

This is the kind of price we pay for the wrong kinds of relationships, for trusting the wrong people when we don’t have discernment. Others may make promises that sound attractive, but what is in their heart? What are their true intentions?

The Bible urges us to be careful about the people we trust and not to be committed to the wrong kind of people (2 Corinthians 6:14).

Today, examine the people you have allowed into your life. What friendships have you formed? Whom are you trusting? Make sure you commit your life to God and love Him and His Word. Ask Him to give you discernment about your relationships and associations. Seek the things that matter. And seek first His Kingdom.
