Voices of Praise

This response has resounded throughout the ages. We are overwhelmed by the significance of Jesus’ birth. We are caught up in the mystery, amazed by the revelation of God’s design, and changed by the fulfillment of His promises.

For countless millions, news of Jesus’ birth has been a cause for celebration – a moment to stop everything and praise God! We see this response in the reaction of the shepherds who left everything to see the baby themselves.

This moment was celebrated in a carol written in the 14th-century translated into English as “Let the Voice of Praise Resound. It was the subject of a 16th-century version written by German composer Michael Praetorius, still sung in churches worldwide.

For Praetorius, this wasn’t just an exercise. He grew up in the church, the son of a pastor (who had been a pupil of Martin Luther). A highly prolific composer, he wrote much music for the church, including more than a thousand chorales.

The message of Christmas played a central role in many of his compositions. Like so many throughout the centuries, Praetorius encouraged believers to view Christmas as a time for praise to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Jesus became the Savior of all people and purges us of sin.

This still is a cause for celebration. Join with the shepherds, Michael Praetorius, and millions throughout history. Fill your life with praise. Jesus has come! Rejoice!
