Victory Over Anger

Anger is a real part of our lives. It’s a powerful emotion—a spiritual force. Anger can destroy relationships and ruin marriages. Anger can also impact the lives of Christians by separating Believers and splitting churches.

Studies have shown that anger results in many changes in our mind, emotions, and body. It leads to an increase in our heart rate, blood pressure, and adrenaline. Anger can explode in harsh words or even violence. At the same time, the presence of anger can foster hostile attitudes and lead to revenge or aggression.

Paul addressed anger in the context of our relationships within the body of Christ. As Christians, he urged us to remember that we are joined together. We are not competing with other Christians. Even when we have differences, we still are “members of one another.”

As Christians, we are to “put on the new man” in Christ, and we need to conduct ourselves differently. Our “old man” was governed by our “deceitful lusts,” but God wants us to be “renewed in the spirit of your mind.” Each of us is to put away lying, and “speak truth with his neighbor.” If we become angry, we must do everything we can, that we “do not sin” (vs. 20-26).

We are not to let our anger intensify. In fact, we are to deal with the issues that cause our anger that very day, if possible. As Paul said, “Do not let the sun go down on your wrath.” We must be on guard against the spiritual roots that can stimulate anger and not “give place to the devil.”

Today, ask God to help you have victory over anger.
