Unnegotiable

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Integrity to God’s commands even in difficult circumstances should be as unnegotiable for us as it was for Job.

“Then his wife said to him, ‘Do you still hold firm your integrity? Curse God and die!’”Job 2:9 NASB

Job was at his low point. His possessions had been decimated. His children had died. His body was afflicted with painful sores. Yet he still was determined to act with integrity.

Job’s wife could not understand this commitment. She urged him, “Curse God and die!”

But integrity was not negotiable for Job. He didn’t understand why he was suffering, but he would not compromise his core beliefs. He knew it was important to trust and honor God.

The Bible tells us that despite everything, “Job did not sin with his lips” (v. 10). In fact, God concluded that Job was “a blameless and upright man” who “holds firm to his integrity” (v. 3). Job never turned his back on God.

How do we react when we go through trials? We can respond like Job’s wife and simply give up, putting aside thoughts of God or His Word. Like so many, we can conclude that integrity is not worth the effort.

Or we can respond like Job: Even though we may have questions, we can determine to obey God’s Word, do what is right, remain committed and resolute, and refuse to compromise.

Don’t allow the circumstances of life to pressure you to give up your commitment to God, His Word, or His principles. Continue to maintain your integrity, have faith in Him, honor Him, and trust Him to guide you, meet your needs, and reward your faithfulness to Him.

Reflection Question: When have you been tempted to compromise your beliefs lately?

Prayer
God, I seek to live according to Your Word. Keep me from compromise. I believe that Your promises are true. In Jesus’ name, amen.
