Many Roman believers clearly were religious. Some knew about God from the Scriptures and their Jewish heritage. Others had attitudes shaped by the Roman culture with its rituals and gods. Paul knew they needed to know the truth.

Trying to teach them required an extensive vocabulary on Paul’s part. Words simply were not adequate. God was beyond anything they could have imagined – so much more glorious.

Paul realized that God’s wisdom and knowledge were far beyond our human understanding. No matter how intelligent we are or how much we pray and read His Word, His ways remain “unfathomable.” We might glimpse His plans, yet they remain “unsearchable.”

The scope of His power is beyond our comprehension, for He “is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think” (Ephesians 3:20). As we consider creation, we know that He made everything. As we consider world events, we realize that He has a purpose and plan for every person and nation.

As we consider our lives, we realize, with amazement, that He loves each of us. He has created us and has a wonderful plan for each life. As we become aware of these truths, we can be like Paul: overwhelmed, amazed, speechless.

Today, humble yourself before Him. Stand in awe of Him. Be grateful for His mercy. Fill your life with praise and worship. He is Almighty God!
