“Then God said, ‘Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years’” (Genesis 1:14).

Seasons are an integral part of God’s creation. In the autumn, leaves change colors and temperatures decline. In the spring, winter’s cold fades, and temperatures warm. Animals emerge from hibernation. Nature seems to come to life.

Seasons can also remind us of how little we are in control—not only of nature, but also of our own mortality and the rapid pace of time. Seasons are symbols of His providential care, providing opportunities to focus on Him. They can remind us of His sovereignty and His command over space and time.

The Hebrew word for seasons here means an appointed place or time, or a meeting. Seasons are like appointed times from God—moments when special things can happen.

God is sovereign. He wants us to focus on Him and realize that the things of this world always change. Kingdoms rise and fall. Movements start and stop. People become popular and then fade into oblivion. But God remains the same (Malachi 3:6).

As you go through the seasons of life, recognize the work God is doing in you. Remember that He has a calendar for you and for the world. You may go through challenging or difficult circumstances. You might feel stretched or overwhelmed. But these experiences won’t last forever—they’re only for a season.

In every season, make sure that you’re faithful to trust and obey Him, living according to His calendar.
