The Simple Truth

The Library of Congress is the largest library in the world, with more than 160 million items on approximately 838 miles of bookshelves. Its collections include millions of books, recordings, photographs, maps, and manuscripts.

But this is only a fraction of the words that have been written throughout human history.

With a history filled with so many documents, and so many words, Psalm 117 can seem insignificant. No section of the Bible is shorter. This has only two verses, comprised of 17 Hebrew words. But it comes just before Psalm 119, which extends for 176 verses.

We might wonder if we can find value in a psalm that is so short. Yet this brevity actually is a key to its power. It delivers a message that cannot be simpler. And the full power of these words is overwhelming.

First, God’s “lovingkindness is great toward us.” The Hebrew words emphasize His overwhelming kindness. It is a kindness that is great, without measure or limit.

And His truth is everlasting. He is not subject to trends and fads. He cannot be bought or bribed. He is not subjective but absolutely objective. He is fair and true in His dealings with everyone. His words are as true today as they were when this psalm was written. And they will be true throughout eternity.

These two attributes of God impact us in so many ways. Their implications extend to every part of our lives. They mean that He is trustworthy and faithful, fair and just, dependable and kind, loving and tender, holy and righteous. As we think about these truths, we can only join the psalmist in praising God.

Make these attributes the cornerstone of your life. Remember these simple truths: God is faithful. And His truth is everlasting.
