The Root of All Evils

Worries about money and finances cripple people every day. Millions, in fact, are troubled about the economy and the stock market. They fret over their jobs and retirement funds. They wonder how to pay their bills, and agonize about their savings.

Proving this point, a recent survey from the American Psychological Association (APA) revealed that 73% of Americans said that money causes more stress than anything else in their lives. In fact, “stress related to money worries can have a real impact on people’s psychological health.”

We cannot escape the role money plays in our lives. We all may need money. But, as Paul warned, we need to realize that the drive for money can become an obsession. In fact, it can dominate our lives, developing into a “craving” that can lead us away from God. These worries can grow, and become “many acute [mental] pangs.”

The Bible tells us that God wants us to be freed from this fear and the problems that can result. We don’t have to stress over our finances. But we cannot be free as long as money is the focus of our lives. As long as we trust in our resources. In fact, Paul told Timothy to “flee from all these things.” Instead, we are to “pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.”

Today, remember that everything you have is a gift from God. He promises to supply all your needs. If you seek first His Kingdom, He promises that “all these things” will be added to you. Seek to be a good steward, sowing with the resources you have been given. Let Him remove your stress and worry.
