The Room of Heaven

“The heaven room” is a unique room in Burghley, an impressive estate located near Peterborough in northeastern England. This room is dominated by massive murals painted by Antonio Verrio, an artist born in 1639 in Naples, Italy. Many consider his work for this room to be his masterpiece.

In this “heaven room,” how did Verrio picture Heaven? There are no scenes from the Bible, no prophets or angels, no Jesus or God the Father. In his vision, Heaven is a scene from Greek mythology, with Greek gods as heroes. Describing Verrio’s work, a 19th century guidebook said, “Gods and Goddesses disporting themselves as Gods and Goddesses are wont to do.”

These scenes tell us a great deal about Verrio, but they also remind us of the many ways people view Heaven. It is the subject of myths and legends, visions and theories. Many religions claim to have the correct understanding of Heaven.

But Believers know that Heaven is not filled with Greek gods or any other creation of man. The Bible describes Heaven as filled with thrones and elders, saints from every nation and all generations, a sea of glass, rainbows, lightning, and thunder. Most of all, here, God is enthroned and worshipped! Here His people will spend eternity with Him.

What is your vision of Heaven? Remember that this is your eternal home. Jesus said He went there ahead of us, to prepare a place for every Believer (John 14:2). He’s preparing a place for you!
