The Charge

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

The charge to Timothy—and to us—is to spread the Good News.

“I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus … to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ.”1 Timothy 6:13–14 ESV

Timothy had no doubt what was expected of him. Why? Because Paul gave him a “charge.” This was not an option, but direct orders on how to live and fulfill God’s calling.

Paul pointed Timothy back to the initial call he received from God. He then reminded Timothy about how Jesus had been faithful in the face of persecution and even death. Under intense scrutiny, Jesus didn’t waver in His testimony before Pontius Pilate. He said the right things at the right time. He was willing to do the will of God, even if this meant going to the cross to die for our sins.

Jesus set an example of selflessness, sacrifice, obedience, and willingness to serve God’s Kingdom, no matter what the cost. Paul encouraged Timothy to follow this example so that he could be an example for others.

Paul also reminded Timothy that Jesus will appear again. Focusing on Jesus’ Second Coming will provide a helpful perspective for our lives as well—in the decisions we make, the standards we set, and the things we do. It defines our purpose for living and stirs our hearts to reach out to others with the Good News of the Gospel.

Today, focus your life on keeping the commandments of God “unstained and free from reproach.” Dedicate your life to bringing salvation to others while there is still time. Stay faithful to Jesus.

Reflection Question: Who can you tell about the Good News of salvation today?
