William Harold Neidlinger made many contributions to culture in America and Europe as a renowned conductor, teacher, organist, and composer. Born in 1863, he also did extensive work in education. Because of his love for children, he established a school for those with special needs.

Particularly during the Christmas season, we remember Neidlinger because of a hymn he wrote that celebrates Jesus’ birth called “The Birthday of a King.” Neidlinger poured his considerable musical skills into the composition. But the essential message was simple: Jesus was born to be King.

Jesus had a humble birthplace in the “little village of Bethlehem.” Yet “how much God gave to us that day.” Because of Jesus, God provided a “path” that is “a perfect, holy way.”

Neidlinger imagined the scene that the shepherds must have beheld that holy night with the angels singing, “And the sky was bright with a holy light ’twas the birthday of a King.”

When the magi came to Jerusalem, they knew that they were looking for a King. But their journey brought them to lowly Bethlehem. They must have been surprised to find the baby Jesus in a stable instead of a palace. Yet they offered Him gifts worthy of royalty.

Jesus still is the King. And He reigns over Heaven and earth. Today, join your voice with the choirs of angels and people of all ages from all nations. Praise and worship Him. Sing Alleluia! Worship Him!
