Sword Thrusts

Sword Thrusts

Words can be painful. They can cut to the core of our being and wound deeply. The Bible is full of warnings about the power of our words. “No one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison” (James 3:8).

One particular way we can wound is by speaking rash words in the heat of the moment, words of raw emotion that come out of our hearts, largely unfiltered, without careful consideration for the implications or impact.

We often do not reflect on the long-term consequences and what will be best for others or ourselves. They often are inconsistent with Christian beliefs and conflict with our testimony.

The Bible compares these words to “sword thrusts.” Picture a sword duel. These verbal thrusts can be one sided, as one person attacks another. Some attacks may be deadly. The non-fatal thrusts may not kill but can leave a lasting negative impact.

In contrast, those who are wise and spiritually mature avoid such rash words. They speak thoughtfully, prayerfully, and after careful consideration. They don’t blurt out words in the heat of the moment but seek to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit.

Ask God to help you speak words that bring healing and restoration. Be careful before attacking others with your words. Pause before speaking. Fill your mind with His Word. Reflect on His truths. Seek His insights. Follow the leading of the Spirit.
