Spiritual Weapons

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

It’s time to get equipped with your spiritual weapons, so you’ll be ready when the enemy attacks.

“’No weapon that is formed against you will succeed; and you will condemn every tongue that accuses you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their vindication is from Me,’ declares the LORD.”—Isaiah 54:17 NASB

The arquebus changed history. Invented in Spain in the mid-fifteenth century, this weapon enabled soldiers to fire more than 600 feet with deadly impact. Scholar Timothy Brook explains that the arquebus redrew the map of Europe. No longer did the size of an army determine victory. What mattered was how its soldiers were armed.

The arquebus symbolizes the continuing evolution of military technology. But it also points to a basic spiritual principle. We are in a spiritual war, facing a ruthless enemy who wants to intimidate, overwhelm, and defeat us.

For this reason, we need to understand the power and authority God has given us. Isaiah said our “heritage” includes power over the enemy, and “No weapon that is formed against you will succeed.”

Jesus likewise told His disciples that He was giving them authority to overcome all the “power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you” (Luke 10:19). But as Paul warned, we still must prepare for battle and “put on the full armor of God.” We must gird our loins with truth and put on the breastplate of righteousness, taking up the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the “sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:10–17).

Don’t allow Satan to defeat you. Use the authority God has given you. Through Jesus, you are more than a conqueror (Romans 8:37)!

Reflection Question: List out the spiritual armor available to you in Ephesians 6:10–20.
