Spirit of God

George Croly had come to realize that he was not adequate to face the challenges of life. Born in Dublin, Ireland, on this day in 1780, he spent much of his adult life as a writer, particularly after moving to London in 1810. He contributed to several publications, often writing about his Christian faith. But today he is most remembered for a hymn he wrote in 1854, called “Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart.”

In this honest hymn, he confessed his “weakness,” that he often was filled with worldly thoughts. He had come to depend on the Spirit to wean him off earth’s attractions, and change his heart and mind. He realized that God, through His Spirit, could overcome the impulses of his flesh and overpower his human weaknesses, and “make me love Thee as I ought to love.”

He told God, “Teach me to feel that Thou art always nigh; teach me the struggles of the soul to bear. To check the rising doubt, the rebel sigh, teach me the patience of unanswered prayer.” He realized that he needed the Spirit’s help to love God “as Thine angels love, one holy passion filling all my frame; the kindling of the heaven descended Dove, my heart an altar, and Thy love the flame.”

Today, remember that the Holy Spirit is with you, right now, in every situation you face. He is ready to empower you and give you the wisdom, favor, power, and ability that you need. To change you! Call on Him. Listen to Him. Trust in Him. He is your Helper!
