Your Solid Rock

As a young boy, Edward Mote spent many Sundays playing in the London streets, neglected by his parents, who managed a pub. Later, he declared that he was “so ignorant…that I did not know that there was a God.”

Eventually he became a Believer and, when he was 55, followed God’s call into full-time ministry. But for most of his life, Mote was a successful cabinetmaker and also wrote hymns.

In 1834, when he was 37 years old, words began forming in his mind one day as he walked to work. By the end of that day, he had written the hymn we know as “The Solid Rock.”
Describing events that must have been vivid in his life, he realized that nothing in this world was certain, but everything was like “sinking sand.” In fact, life’s problems could be like a “whelming flood.” But he knew he could depend upon God. With powerful conviction, he wrote, “On Christ, the Solid Rock, I stand.”

Truly, the world is an uncertain place. Who can we trust? Where can we turn?

As Mote learned, we need to realize that God is our Rock. He does not change. His Word always is true. We can know that He will deliver us, provide what we need, and answer our prayers if only we trust in Him.

Jesus described how those who hear His words were like “a wise man who built his house on the rock.” If we trust in this world, our lives will have no stability and be like shifting sand. But, strengthened by His Word, we can be ready for any situation (Matthew 7:24-25).

All around, you may find sinking sand today. But remember that you can depend on God. Make Him your Solid Rock.
