The Salt of the Earth

Today is election day in the U.S., a day in which American citizens can help determine the direction of their country, and who will serve in public offices. This also should be a day in which Christians let their voice be heard. Yet, amazingly, millions of Christians will not even vote.

In an analysis of a recent election, it was reported that 41% of born-again adults did not vote. Or almost 35 million Christians! How will they justify their actions to God?

Why do so many Christians fail to fulfill this basic obligation and responsibility? Perhaps they feel helpless and do not think their votes matter. Perhaps they are not excited about the candidates or disagree with some views. Perhaps they are busy and just do not feel like exerting the effort.

But, before God, none of these excuses is justifiable. Jesus said that we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. This is part of our calling as Believers. We have an obligation to be salt and light. A responsibility. If we do not, we are like the salt that is “thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.”

Make sure that you vote, and encourage others to vote as well. Ask God to guide your voting selection. Pray for your country and its leaders. Let your voice be heard throughout the year. You are the light of the world, and the salt of the earth.
