Remembering

Before the children of Israel entered the Promised Land, God gave them a series of commands, designed to help them achieve success and avoid problems. But they also would help them remember their past.

He knew that they had a short memory. It was likely that they would become focused on their immediate needs, and forget their history, including all that He had done for them.

One of His commands concerned the Sabbath day. God did not just create a series of rules about the Sabbath to provide another ritual. His commands were designed to help His people remember their experiences in Egypt and how He delivered them “with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm.”

Every Sabbath, they had an opportunity to remember this history, and all that He had done for them. These reminders would help them keep life in perspective, and have thankful hearts.

Today is Memorial Day in the United States, a day set aside to remember those who have given their lives for their country. How quickly we can forget these men and women, and the sacrifices that they made.

On this day of memories, ask God to help you remember the debt you owe to your forefathers, and others who have given their lives serving your country. Do not take your faith or freedoms for granted, but gratefully and prayerfully pause to reflect, remember, and honor those who have gone before you. And always remember to thank God for all that He has done.
