Ready to Encourage

So important was her mission that Mary was visited by an angel, who described how she was to conceive and bear a son who would “be called the Son of the Most High” (v. 32). This seemed impossible since she was a virgin. But the angel told her, “nothing will be impossible with God” (v. 37). Mary still had questions, but responded she would do whatever God called her to do: “May it be done to me according to your word” (v. 38).

As her pregnancy became visible, some in the community were likely suspicious. Did they really believe her story that she had been visited by an angel and was pregnant by the Holy Spirit?

Facing doubters, Mary needed encouragement. And the best-equipped person to encourage her was her relative Elizabeth, who also was experiencing a supernatural pregnancy.

As Mary approached, Elizabeth delivered a prophetic word, confirming that Mary was blessed among women and “the mother of my Lord” (v. 43). She praised Mary because she willingly accepted her assignment. Mary was so encouraged that she stayed with Elizabeth several months before returning home.

We can see how Elizabeth encouraged Mary when she might have had questions and been weary. Others might have doubted her story, but Elizabeth knew it was true.

Be ready to fulfill the role to which God calls you. Be ready to be a voice of encouragement.
