Qualifications

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

True qualifications for serving God aren’t about appearance or status; they’re about a humble heart, obedience, and dependence on Him.

“There was a man of Benjamin whose name was Kish … a valiant mighty man. He had a son whose name was Saul, a young and handsome man, and there was not a more handsome man than he among the sons of Israel.”1 Samuel 9:1–2 NASB

When Saul was named Israel’s first king, he had distinguishing characteristics. His father was a “prominent man” (CSB), and Saul was tall and handsome—he looked like a leader.

For a time, Saul was successful. But this success was the result of God’s favor and the wise counsel provided by Samuel—not the result of Saul’s looks or background, skills, or talents.

Everything changed when Saul stopped submitting to God and started seeking his own plans. He became possessive, selfish, and paranoid. When he started reinterpreting God’s Word, the Lord removed him as king.

After God selected David as Saul’s replacement, Samuel had many questions. David did not look like a leader, but God told Samuel, “God does not see as man sees, since man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7).

Many people think they can succeed based on their looks or resources, experience, connections, heritage, or history. These attributes may seem like keys to success. But God looks for people who are humble, obedient, faithful, and Spirit filled.

Seek to have a heart that pleases God. Surrender your life to Him and ask Him to use you to accomplish His purposes. Depend on Him completely and with a right heart.

Reflection Question: Are you relying on outward traits or a surrendered heart to serve God?
