“To understand a proverb and an enigma, the words of the wise and their riddles.” – Proverbs 1:6 NKJV

Centuries ago, the French developed a word for it. It was how they described being “confused” or “bewildered.” The word eventually was adapted into English as “puzzled.” This (and related words such as “puzzles”) were applied to various games.

But the word also seemed appropriate for countless moments in life. Problems with no clear solutions. Challenges that defy logical explanation. Forks in the road with no roadmaps. Baffling questions with no obvious answers. Times when we just don’t know what to do.

The Bible warns that all of us will face these “enigmas” or “riddles.” These situations can be frustrating. They can make us feel paralyzed. Uneasy. Confused. When trapped in puzzling mazes, we can feel desperate, wondering where we can turn. How do we find answers? The way out?

If we are wise we will turn to God, starting by filling our minds with His Word. This gives us a strong foundation. It equips us to “know wisdom and instruction” and “perceive the words of understanding.” At every stage, these words give us perspective, and equip us with the attitudes that help us develop the right answers. They “give prudence to the simple.” To the young, they give “knowledge and discretion” to understand how to make right choices.

God gives us choices. He gives us His Word, but He allows us to decide to if we will listen, or if we will turn somewhere else. His Word promises that “a wise man will hear and increase learning, and a man of understanding will attain wise counsel.” His Word gives us the right answers, and teaches us how to approach the enigmas and riddles of life.

Do you face situations that you find confusing? Any riddles? Puzzling problems? Make sure to commit these to God, and seek the wisdom and discernment He gives in His Word.

Prayer: Father, I commit these situations to You: _______. Thank You for giving me guidance and wisdom. I will base my life on Your Word. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
