Prophesying Musicians

“David and the chiefs of the service also set apart for the service the sons of Asaph, and of Heman, and of Jeduthun, who prophesied with lyres, with harps, and with cymbals … who prophesied under the direction of the king” (1 Chronicles 25:1–2).

The Bible gives many examples of prophecies and describes many ways these messages can be received. For instance, the Holy Spirit can illuminate God’s written Word, give us dreams and visions, or anoint a man or woman to proclaim His message to us.

Our thoughts logically turn to words spoken or written, or even to the delivery of prophecy through song.

But in the time of David, the Bible describes a completely different kind of prophecy: delivered by musicians through their musical instruments. Specifically, some people were assigned “to prophesy with lyres, harps, and cymbals.” The music itself, even without lyrics, could be a form of prophecy.

God can communicate to us even through nonverbal sounds—sending us a message through the emotions, rhythms, and atmosphere created by the music.

This reveals an entirely different side of prophecy where God is speaking music! What’s more, God can speak through art, sculpture, architecture, nature, or anything else in His creation!

God can speak to you at any time—through words or music, or in countless other ways. He is the Creator, and He can use anything and anyone to accomplish His purposes. Seek to become more sensitive to His constant presence. Be ready to listen—always sensitive, always available.
