Priestly Garments

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

The Old Testament priestly garments served as a reminder that the priests were to serve as God’s representatives.

“The holy garments of Aaron shall be for his sons after him, so that they may be anointed and ordained in them.”Exodus 29:29 NASB

When men were called to serve God as priests, He was not only interested in their personal conduct, attitude, and speech, but He was also interested in the clothes they wore! These men were called to be God’s representatives, and He wanted even their garments to be holy—symbols of His holy nature.

Aaron and his sons were the first to wear the priestly garments. But instead of owning these garments, they also were “for his sons after him.” The garments were to be passed down from generation to generation, so “that they may be anointed and ordained in them.”

When each person put on his garment, he was reminded he was God’s servant, called to accomplish His purposes. He understood he had a special responsibility to represent the Lord to the people of his time.

Sadly, throughout the years, some misrepresented the sacred responsibility to which they were called. For example, the sons of Eli were “useless men,” misusing their position for their own benefit (1 Samuel 2:12–17).

God blesses us so that we might be a blessing to others. Each of us is given unique talents, gifts, responsibilities, and resources. Why? That we might use them in His service and for His Kingdom.

Remember that you are a servant of God and that everything belongs to Him. Commit your life to fulfilling His purposes for you. Serve Him faithfully and bring glory to Him through your life!
