Pray for the Nations

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

When we see countries in conflict and regions suffering from natural disasters, our first response should be to pray for the nations.

“Ask it of Me, and I will certainly give the nations as Your inheritance, and the ends of the earth as Your possession.”Psalm 2:8 NASB

When the psalmist looked at the world, he saw turmoil and tumult. He asked, “Why are the nations restless and the peoples plotting in vain?” (v. 1) He concluded it was because “the kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers conspire together” (v. 2).

What brought these evildoers together? Their position against God and His people. They were determined to “tear their shackles apart” (v. 3).

Then the psalmist had a revelation: God was not afraid or intimidated. In fact, He found this opposition amusing, though tragically so. He “scoffs” (v. 4) at those who foolishly exalt themselves against Him. He promises to judge and correct those who defy Him so openly.

Then God presents a challenge: “Ask it of Me, and I will certainly give the nations as Your inheritance, and the ends of the earth as Your possession” (v. 8). God was teaching us about the potential of prayer to unleash His power upon the earth.

Still, it’s easy for Christians to feel intimidated and defensive. We see nations, rulers, and people from all walks of life defying God, openly rejecting His ways, and mocking anyone who believes in Him. But God is not worried. He’s looking for believers who are willing to be bold and have faith to pray with conviction to ask Him for big things.

Boldly pray. Believe that His Word is true. Ask Him for the nations!

Reflection Question: Compose a prayer for your nation and countries around the world.
