Practical Proof

Regardless of what some might think, human effort alone cannot solve our problems, or bring us closer to God. In fact, we cannot please Him by just trying to be “better” people. The Bible reminds of this truth: “By grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8).

Paul continually stressed these principles in his letters. The key was “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” The goal was to be complete in Christ (Colossians 1:27-28).

We easily can be sidetracked by being excessively focused on behavior. Paul described issues like what we eat or drink, celebrations or rituals. But these “are a mere shadow of what is to come” (Colossians 2:16-19). These may have the “appearance of wisdom,” but really are just “self-made religion.”

At the same time, we demonstrate that real change has taken place in practical ways. Having “received Christ Jesus the Lord,” we are to “walk in Him” (Colossians 2:6). Everything should be different because of Christ. We should not be motivated by personal interests but by Christ, “who is our life.” Drawing from His power, we no longer should be dominated by subjective emotions, thoughts, or desires, but should set our minds on the things above.

Today, remember that you are a new creature in Christ, that God has promised glorious things for you. Deepen your relationship with Him. Make a conscious decision to seek Him. Spend time with Him. Surrender your life to Him. Fill your heart and mind with His Word.
