Personal Favor

When he realized the richness of God’s blessings, David was overwhelmed! God had told him that He would establish his kingdom and raise up a descendant who would “build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever” (2 Samuel 7:13).

David seemed to realize all that God had done for him; how, as a mere shepherd, he’d been blessed by God in battle; how God had elevated him to become Israel’s king. Humbled, he was amazed and in awe (2 Samuel 7:12-19).

A thousand years later, the impact of this testimony still rang loudly throughout God’s people. As Stephen reflected on Israel’s history, he emphasized that David had “found favor in God’s sight.” He had “earned” nothing, but still God’s blessing had flowed abundantly.
He had received God’s “favor.” The Greek word here alternatively is translated “grace.” It reflects actions that cause joy and pleasure without any expectation of return. It is “unmerited favor.”

David had realized the miracle of God’s favor. This was the same favor shown to Mary when the angel told her, “You have found favor with God” (Luke 1:30). This favor was demonstrated as Jesus increased “in favor with God and men” (Luke 2:52).

As God’s children, we are beneficiaries of His grace and favor. This means that He pours out His abundance on us. He opens doors when they seem shut. He gives victory when defeat seems inevitable. He gives wisdom that no human mind could comprehend.

Today, stop for a moment. Think of all God has done for you! All His promises! Draw near to Him, growing ever more intimate in this relationship. Feast on His Word, and look for His favor in every situation. Continually live in the full expectation that He is with you.
