Overwhelming Forces

“‘Don’t be afraid…Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.’ And Elisha prayed, ‘O LORD, open his eyes so he may see.’…He looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.” 2 Kings 6:15-17 NIV

In June 1940, many in France were dismayed. The invading Nazi forces had won a swift victory. They seemed invincible; all seemed lost. But Charles de Gaulle refused to give up, having escaped to England where he continued the resistance. De Gaulle had been a decorated soldier, respected throughout the country. His voice and commitment inspired renewed hope.

In a radio address, he told the French people that he saw a different world than those who accepted defeat. “This war has not been decided by the Battle of France…All our mistakes, all our delays, all our suffering, do not alter the fact that there is in the universe all the means needed to crush our enemies one day.” Time would prove that de Gaulle was right.

Israel faced a similar situation when Aram surrounded them with what appeared to be overwhelming superiority. Reflecting the feeling of hopelessness many held, Elisha’s servant asked, “Oh, my lord, what shall we do?”

But Elisha saw the situation with spiritual eyes. He knew that God was on their side and that He was greater than any power on earth. After he prayed, the servant saw why Elisha was confident: The hills were “full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.” God brought them victory.

Today, the forces of evil can seem overwhelming. You might be afraid or discouraged, or feel like giving up. But the Bible urges us to renew our confidence in God. He is on our side. When we trust in Him and call on His name, we can count on Him for victory!

Prayer: Father, help me to trust in You. Open my eyes to see the reality of Your power and resources. You are greater than any problem or person in the world. Thank You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
