Overthrowing Strongholds

The 1958 Tchaikovsky Competition was being held in Moscow and tensions were high, the impact of the lingering Cold War. Although this competition attracted aspiring musicians from around the world, the assumption was that a Russian would be awarded first prizes, particularly the prize for the leading pianist.

But on this day in 1958, something surprising happened. Young American pianist Van Cliburn dazzled the audience with a remarkable performance. His technique and interpretation were so superior that the judges had no choice but award him the prize.

More than merely winning an award, many observed that this victory helped change the tone of the Cold War. Even years later, many Russians point to his performance as a turning point. One pianist commented, Cliburn “changed for us this frightening image of the ‘capitalist enemies.’” It was a weapon that no one had anticipated and made a powerful impact.

The Bible reminds us how similar principles are true in the spiritual world. Because of our carnal nature, we can tend to approach our problems from a material or physical perspective. But the Bible warns that we cannot win these battles in the flesh. The key to victory is fighting in the spirit, employing the “mighty” weapons God has given us.

Remember. God has made these weapons available to you to help you to bring down the strongholds of the enemy! But you must use these spiritual weapons. You must have faith, and not doubt. You are in a spiritual war.

Be ready to do battle today in the Spirit. Pray boldly, with intensity. Stand on God’s Word. Believe that with Him, all things are possible. Believe Him for victory.
