One in Christ

In many ways, in Rome and throughout the ancient world, people were locked into a permanent destiny from birth. As historian Tom Holland describes, Romans had an obsession for hierarchy. Everyone was ranked into specific roles based on their wealth, family, and achievements.

Women often were excluded from this ranking process. Historian Albert Bell, Jr. explains that in Rome (and most other cultures) “women did not count for much.” In fact, Roman women did not even have individual names but just “feminine forms of their family name.” Women usually received no education and were excluded from leadership positions.

This environment helps us realize why the Gospel had such a revolutionary impact. Everything changed when a person became a believer. As citizens of God’s Kingdom, limits were removed. Membership wasn’t defined by society’s rules but was a free gift for all who believed. And the Holy Spirit was available to anyone, giving supernatural power and abilities.

Some may have found these truths difficult to grasp, almost too good to be true. But the fact is that the Gospel is true! It is available to everyone. Men and women. Old and young. Rich and poor. Amazingly, we are all one in Christ.

Instead of being limited to manmade ranks, all believers are called to serve each other. Instead of striving for power and control, we are to be like Jesus, who washed His disciples’ feet (John 13:1-14).

Today, the Gospel still sets us free. Free to experience the fullness of God’s blessings. And it still is available to anyone!

In your life, don’t let the world define or limit you. Remember. You, personally, have a unique calling from God, who has given you special gifts. Seek to serve Him faithfully. And believe Him for great things.
