Moved by Prophecy

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Learn how King Asa was moved by prophecy to make radical changes in Israel.

“When Asa heard these words and the prophecy which Azariah the son of Oded the prophet spoke, he took courage and removed the abominable idols.”—2 Chronicles 15:8 NASB

Throughout history, God has spoken to His people. When He sent prophets to warn of coming events and urge them to change their ways, the people oftentimes did not listen to God’s warnings.

But the response was different during the reign of Asa. The Spirit of God fell on Azariah, and he prophesied that God wanted to help, but they had a choice: “If you seek Him, He will let you find Him; but if you abandon Him, He will abandon you” (v. 2). It was that simple.

There was no peace, but rather “many disturbances” (v. 5). Their world was filled with distress which God Himself had allowed. Why? Because He wanted them to return to Him.

Azariah told Asa that to fulfill his key role in God’s plan, he must “be strong and not lose courage” (v. 7). Moved by this prophecy, Asa acted and removed the idols in the land. His commitment inspired the people to enter into a covenant to seek the Lord “with all their heart and soul” (v. 12), which sparked a powerful revival.

God continues to speak to those who will listen. The question is, how will we respond? Will we ignore Him? Or will we hear and have the boldness and courage to act?

Ask God to make you more sensitive to hearing His Spirit. Listen and obey. Fulfill your unique role in His plans.

Reflection Question: What idols do you need to remove from your life today?
