Missed Opportunities

It can be natural to assume that every military conflict ends with either victory or defeat. However, in their study of military campaigns, Eliot A. Cohen and John Gooch observed that there is a third option that, in reality, is much more common.

They point out that “defeat is not the only alternative to victory.” The third option is a “middle ground” they describe as “missed opportunity.” Not exactly victories but not really defeats either.

In reaching this conclusion, they cited the comments of German General Field Marshal Erich von Manstein, who talked about “lost victories.” These are situations when military forces could have taken action and taken advantage of existing conditions but, for whatever reason, did not. There may not be a landmark to commemorate these moments, but the impact of these “lost victories” may be even more devastating than defeats.

Each of us has many such opportunities throughout our lives. These could be situations where we could have made an investment. Could have done something. Could have made a decision. Could have shared the Gospel. But did not.

The Bible warns us that we need to be ready at all times. For example, Jesus talked about the ten virgins, and how only five of them were ready when the bridegroom appeared. They had a “missed opportunity.” They missed the wedding, and paid the price.

Today, ask God to help you to be ready for every opportunity that He brings into your life. Ask Him to help you avoid these “lost victories.” Make sure that your heart is right, that you are sensitive to His Spirit, confident in Him, and ready!
