Masks

Thomas Cromwell, born in 1485, was a dominant figure in the English government of the sixteenth century. For years, he was the power behind the throne of Henry VIII, serving several important positions. In his path to power, he drew upon the rich experiences of his youth, as a soldier in mainland Europe, a banker in Italy, and a clerk in the Netherlands.

Returning to England, he became a brilliant lawyer and then a member of the House of Commons, proving to be a master politician. After moving into Henry’s government, he operated with great skill, tackling many sensitive issues, but also making many enemies. His actions often were considered ruthless, but he felt they were necessary to deal with antiquated customs and traditions.

Eventually he was arrested after the failure of the marriage he arranged between Henry and Anne of Cleves. Cromwell was executed, without trial, for treason on July 28, 1540.

Why had he been so successful? He said he had learned that people often masked their true intentions. He learned how to recognize these masks, to see through them, and discern their real nature and desires.

Jesus knew that many people parade around behind masks, seeking to disguise their true nature. To hide their real intentions. These people were hypocrites, appearing to be spiritual while, in reality, having hearts far from God.

His words were a warning to all of us. For God desires that we have “clean hands and a pure heart” (Psalm 24:4). That we lay aside “all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking” (1 Peter 2:1), and seek to be honest. Pure in spirit. On guard against those around us who may be wearing masks.
