Making All Things New Today

Many people today are discouraged. For example, a recent Gallup Poll discovered that during the past year, “in most European countries, people’s optimism about their lives remained the same or declined.” In fact, “in 12 European countries, at least one in five expected their lives to get worse.”

Why the pessimism? The world is filled with problems. Many are confused, worried, and afraid. It’s hard to see answers to the worldwide economic troubles. No matter what governments may do, we still see poverty and crime, wars and violence. Godly people are being persecuted, while the ungodly seem to prosper.

During such times, it can be easy to become discouraged. But those who know God and are guided by His Word can have hope and encouragement in the midst of any situation.

In the vision God gave John, he saw a new heaven and earth where God reigned and His presence was everywhere. The “first earth” and all its problems had passed away.

John also saw how much God cares about each of us. He knows our struggles and heartaches. He dwells with us, and we are “His people.” He understands our pains and the turmoil we endure. He even knows the tears we cry, as well as every sorrow and disappointment. He knows every moment of uncertainty and worry, and He promises to “wipe away every tear” from our eyes.

In the new world that awaits us, He promises that “there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.”

As you begin this new year, don’t let your mind and heart be dominated by troubles in the world. Don’t be discouraged or pessimistic. Instead, have faith in God. Renew your trust in Him. He is making all things new!
