Loyalty

“That which is desirable in a man is his loyalty and unfailing love, but it is better to be a poor man than a [wealthy] liar.”
Proverbs 19:22 Amplified Bible

As king over Israel, Solomon had the opportunity to supervise many people. And, as a result of his interactions throughout the world, he also had the opportunity to observe people of all ranks in many nations. Generals and craftsmen. Artists and musicians. Kings and servants.

Through these experiences, he certainly recognized the kind of people whom he valued. He knew that special skills and attributes he felt were important. He would have wanted men and women who had the necessary training and background.

But Solomon said that there was one particular skill that was “desirable.” The Hebrew word here suggests that these were things that he longed for. That were the delight of his heart.

Of all the skills and attributes, the one characteristic he most valued was “loyalty.” The Hebrew word here also can be translated as “kindness” or “unfailing love.”

This expresses an attitude we can demonstrate anywhere, with anyone. For people who are loyal are treasured because they are faithful and dependable. They can be counted on to complete their assignments. They are willing to work as part of a team, humble and hard-working, pursuing their God-given goals.

They are the kind of people one desires to be employees or managers, friends or colleagues. People others want to know, work with, and be close to.

This is a reminder of the kind of people we should be. In our work and church, neighborhood and home, the people with whom we interact long for those who are kind, faithful, and loyal.

In your life, remember the importance of loyalty. Seek to be faithful and dependable in all you do. Ask God to give you the right priorities, and allow His love to flow through your life, to be an effective witness, example, and testimony.

Prayer: Father, I lay aside my personal ambitions, and dedicate myself to seek first Your Kingdom. Help me to be faithful and loyal. Thank You for Your love for me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
