Loving this World

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

“Demas, having loved this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica.”—2 Timothy 4:10 NASB

Demas had been described as a “fellow worker” of Paul, comparable to Mark (Philemon 1:24). He was one of Paul’s faithful colleagues, on par with Luke (Colossians 4:14). He had been a loyal friend, trusted by Paul and part of his inner circle.

But by the time Paul wrote to Timothy, Demas had “deserted” him. The Greek word Paul used indicates that he had transferred his loyalties elsewhere. What had happened?

Demas “loved this present world.” We don’t know all the details, just that his affections had shifted. Rather than seeking first the Kingdom of God, he had become focused on “this present world” with its pleasures and attractions.

Just think of all Demas had experienced—the miles he traveled with Paul, the miracles he had seen, the teachings he had heard. Yet the world’s attraction was so strong that he could walk away from everything he knew. If the world could attract such a man, the same thing can happen to any of us…even you.

Today, think about your own life—your affections, your loyalties, your ambitions. Do the things of this world have such a hold on you that you might compromise?

Search your heart, and renew your relationship with God. Remember, “The world is passing away and also its lusts, but the one who does the will of God continues to live forever”
(1 John 2:17).

Reflection Question: Have you ever lost a friend for one reason or another?

Prayer
Father, I seek first Your Kingdom. Keep me from letting the world capture my affections. Help me stay true to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
