Lovesick

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

God wants us to be so desperately in love with Him—lovesick—that we crave His presence.

“Swear to me, you daughters of Jerusalem, if you find my beloved, as to what you will tell him: for I am lovesick.”Song of Solomon 5:8 NASB

Solomon described a woman who was so in love that she felt “lovesick.” She realized the depth of her love when her beloved departed from her presence. She searched for him but “did not find him” and called him, “but he did not answer” (v. 6).

In her desperation, she went to dangerous places where she was found by watchmen making their rounds. They wounded her, and the guardsmen of the walls took away her shawl. Yet, for her, it was worth the effort.

More than a picture of romantic love, this also describes the kind of love God wants us to have for Him—to be so desperately in love with Him that we crave His presence.

But it’s easy to miss out on experiencing this love relationship. Other things and people can occupy our time and attention. Instead of being desperately in love with the Lord, He becomes an afterthought.

When He was asked, “Which is the great commandment in the Law?” Jesus quoted Deuteronomy: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind” (Matthew 22:36–37).

How deeply do you love God? Don’t let anything stand in your way! Remember that He loves you and longs for your presence, your time, and your affection. If your love for Him has grown cold, seek to rekindle your relationship and let that love consume and change you!

Reflection Question: What can you do practically to rekindle your love for Jesus today?

Prayer
Jesus, I love You! Forgive me for allowing other things to distract and separate me from You. Help me rekindle our relationship. In Your name, amen.
