Lessons from a Wise Woman

“Then a wise woman called from the city, ‘. . . Please tell Joab, “Come here that I may speak with you.” . . . I am of those who are peaceable and faithful in Israel. You are seeking to destroy a city, even a mother in Israel. Why would you swallow up the inheritance of the Lord?’” 2 Samuel 20:16-19 NASB

After having survived a revolt led by his son, Absalom, David faced another rebellion, led by a man named Sheba. The consequences were serious as “all the men of Israel withdrew from following David and followed Sheba.”

David’s army, under the leadership of Joab, pursued Sheba, seeking to quell the rebellion. He had found refuge in a place called, Abel Beth-maacah. The whole city became a target for Joab’s army.

But, then, an unknown woman decided to take action. The Bible simply describes her as “wise.” She recognized that the problem was not the city or its people, but Sheba. She proposed a simple solution: if they delivered Sheba, the war would be over.

Joab was persuaded by her argument. And she convinced the other citizens to hand over the head of Sheba. Thus, the siege ended, and the city was spared. All because this unnamed woman applied wisdom, spoke up, and took action.

Today, many Christians see problems but are not willing to get involved or do anything. They sit idly by, doing nothing. But God wants us to be bold and ready to speak, pray, give, share, or do whatever else needs to be done.

Do not be complacent, afraid, or timid. Ask for God’s wisdom. Allow Him to use you in the lives of people in your community, your church, and the world. Ask Him to give you creative alternatives, new approaches and strategies, and fresh ideas. Do not be concerned with getting honors or rewards, but put your emphasis on serving Him.

Prayer: Father, open my eyes to the ways I can be Your servant in the lives of others. Give me Your solutions and Your wisdom. Give me boldness and faith. I trust in You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
