Jesus Speaks Peace

It was a dark time for war-torn London. Thousands in England had been killed in bombings. Nazi armies still ruled the European continent. Basic necessities were rationed. Morale was low. Millions were afraid.

On this day in 1943 during this climate of despair, the Fifth Symphony by Ralph Vaughan Williams debuted at a concert in London (and broadcast nationwide via radio). Many people anticipated music filled with anxiety that reflected the times. Instead, they heard sounds filled with unexpected calm. A tone of peace spread throughout the country. Thousands described this as a balm for troubled hearts as Vaughan Williams provided a glimpse of a time when peace would return.

The disciples experienced the impact that Jesus could have on their troubled hearts when a great storm assailed their boat. Filled with anxiety and worry, they woke Jesus, who calmly rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” Suddenly, “there was a great calm.”

Our hearts may be troubled for many reasons. We may be battered by the storms of life. We may feel anxious and worried. But God is ready to speak calm into our lives. At times like these, we can remember His Word, “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10).

Today, spend time seeking God. Confess His promises. Commit your worries and cares to Him. Let Him take away your burdens. Allow His peace to flood your life.
