Humble Before Our God

“Do you know who I am?” the defiant female TV executive brazenly defied a police officer. The officer had responded to reports the woman had become drunk and unruly on a recent flight. When confronted, the drunk executive lashed out, breaking the officer’s glasses. Then she threatened to call a camera crew, boasting to the officer, “You’ll lose your job, and I’ll ruin your life!”

But the officer wasn’t intimidated, and the executive was arrested. She would pay for her actions. She wasn’t as invincible or powerful as she imagined. Was she always so arrogant? Probably not. But, like so many people, she had changed.

Once, all of us were infants, helpless and vulnerable. Throughout our lives, we each have experienced what it’s like to be beginners—young students, nervous rookies, apprentices learning a craft. As entry-level professionals, many begin their careers thrilled just to have an opportunity to work. Yet, along the way, some become arrogant, just like this TV executive.

How easily we can change…after we achieve success, advance in our careers, receive power and authority, become known as “experts,” win awards, or gain riches. In the process, we become like Saul at the end of his life—no longer humble, but proud; not eager to serve or learn, but possessive and self-centered; not surrendered to God, but depending on our own strength and resources.

This can happen to anybody, anytime. Make sure it doesn’t happen to you. Stay humble before God. Submit your life to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Pray. Dedicate your life to His Kingdom. Remember that everything belongs to Him and that you are His servant.
