Holiness

The family of Kohath was given special instructions. Unlike other Israelites, they had the privilege of handling the holy objects for the tabernacle. But only under certain conditions.

Even though they had this special assignment, they still had to learn to obey God. There were lines they could not cross and laws that could not be broken. These were not optional matters, for the penalty for violation was death. There were no second chances.

Why was God so uncompromising? Because these were issues at the core of His character and His relationship with His people. The Kohathites needed to realize that He was totally holy and perfectly pure. They had to know His laws and understand the consequences of violating them. This understanding would shape their attitudes and actions.

The Lord knew they would be tempted to compromise…to bend the rules…and to take Him for granted. But He wanted them to be serious about serving Him. Even though they had a special assignment, they must never forget His character, His laws, and His truth.

The responsibilities given to this family remind us of Jesus’ words that “from everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and to whom they entrusted much, of him they will ask all the more” (Luke 12:48).

Today, be thankful that God is merciful, ever ready to forgive our sins. But never forget that He also is holy and pure. Remember that His Word is true, and there are consequences for your actions. Never take Him for granted.
