His Stripes

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

His stripes, or punishment, made a way for our redemption.

“He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.”Isaiah 53:5 NKJV

Some thought of Jesus as a teacher. When He taught, they pressed all around Him, eager to hear every word. Some thought of Him as a miracle worker. They rejoiced when He healed the sick and marveled when He opened the eyes of the blind. The crowds united in loud praise as He approached Jerusalem for the last time, shouting, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord” (Luke 19:38).

But, as Isaiah prophesied, there was another side to Jesus’ earthly life. While some loved Him, others “despised and rejected” Him. Ultimately, He was afflicted, stricken, and “bruised for our iniquities.” Although Jesus lived a sinless life, He was wounded and given “stripes”—deep welts and cuts—by the whips of the Roman soldiers.

It was no coincidence that He died during Passover, for He came to be the “Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29), our Passover Lamb.

Today, remember that Jesus died for you! He was despised and forsaken for you! He was wounded for your transgressions. His stripes provide spiritual healing for anyone—including you!

Do you have a need in your life? Turn to Jesus and have faith in Him. He has experienced pain, and He knows what you are going through. He is ready to comfort, heal, and transform you. He is your Messiah, the Lamb of God. Trust Him and believe His promises.
