Gripped by Darkness

Darkness seems to have a special appeal for human nature. Under the cloak of darkness, secrets can seem secure. We seem freed from scrutiny, and able to do things we might not want others to know. Yes, as Jesus described, “men loved darkness.” This was true in His time and today. It is true for adults and even children.

People all around us in the world don’t just like darkness; they love it. And they express this love in countless ways – often by avoiding or rejecting the light.

Jesus came as the “light of the world,” but, sadly, some people will not accept the light. In fact, they are in love with their deeds of darkness and committed to this dark lifestyle. Their deeds are evil, and they wish to conceal them from the light.

Paul described this as a spiritual condition. He wrote that “the God of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ” (2 Corinthians 4:4 NIV).

This shows us why so many people hate the Gospel. They are repelled by God’s light. And they have been blinded. As a result, they avoid the light and ridicule anyone who follows it. They love darkness so much that they cannot consider the possibility that this light could be real. They just want to do what they want to do and reject the idea that there are eternal standards.

As you think about the world, remember how attractive darkness is to many people. And remember that this is a spiritual problem. Pray for those who embrace the darkness. Pray that God will shine His light on them. In your life, seek to be a pure vessel, that His light may shine through you.
