God Holds the Future

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

“Only I can tell you the future before it even happens. Everything I plan will come to pass, for I do whatever I wish.”—Isaiah 46:10 NLT

James Rowe spent most of his life far from his homeland. Born on this day in 1865 in England, he worked for the Irish Government before immigrating to America where he worked in railroads and the Hudson River Humane Society. A devoted believer, he developed a passion for writing lyrics to hymns, numbering many thousands.

Through his diverse experiences, he had many opportunities to be concerned about the future. In 1922, he authored a poem that reflected what he learned. It was called “God Holds the Future in His Hands.”

He wrote that regardless of circumstances, we should not dread the future. Burdens may seem great, and we may face many trials. But we can trust God.

We may not know what will take place tomorrow, but we can know that God will guide us. We need to remember that He is the Creator and sovereign even over the events of life. Years will come and go, but to Him these “are but an open page.”

Rowe gave this advice: “Live close to Him and trust His love.” At times we may roam, but whatever comes, God will guide us safely home. We can be confident that He understands us and that He is our friend.

As you approach the year ahead, don’t be filled with dread. Know that God holds the future. He is sovereign over space and time. And He loves you. You can trust Him.

Reflection Question: What are your plans and goals for the coming year?
