Freedom!

The Law reinforced the importance of personal responsibility. In fact, there were many examples of consequences for every action. But God also gave another principle that put this in context. This was debt cancelation.

This meant that, every seventh year, all debts were to be canceled. They were to be canceled regardless of the cause, and regardless of the personal history. It was to be a time of freedom and release.

While the Law symbolizes judgment, debt cancelation symbolizes God’s forgiveness. While He is a God of laws and judgment, but He is also a God of grace and mercy. As the New Testament would declare, “mercy triumphs over judgment”(James 2:13 NASB).

Debt cancelation reminds us God gives us second chances. If we confess our sins, we can be forgiven (1 John 1:9). God provided this principle because He wanted us be free! Freed from poverty and sin. Freed from fear and worry. Freed to be able to receive His fullest blessings.

These are powerful reminders of the freedom He offers you. God does not want you weighed down by burdens and cares, by sins or mistakes. He wants you to be free, to experience victory! To realize that “if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new”(2 Corinthians 5:17).

Are there things you wish you could do again? Have you made mistakes or wrong choices? The Bible tells us that God is ready to forgive you. Confess your sins to Him, right now. He can wipe the slate clean, and give you a new start.
