For a Thousand Tongues!

In 1735, John and Charles Wesley were sent by their church in England as emissaries to America. Their qualifications? They were thought to be religious.

On board ship, they met some Moravians, whose faith impressed the Wesleys. After returning to England, the Wesleys met more Moravians. Through these encounters, the Wesleys realized they had not accepted Jesus as their Savior. These Moravians led the brothers to make this commitment.

Eleven years later, Charles wrote a hymn to commemorate his conversion. He wrote, “Oh, for a thousand tongues to sing my great Redeemer’s praise, the glories of my God and King, the triumphs of His grace!”

Born on this day in 1707, Charles poured out his gratitude: “My gracious Master and my God, assist me to proclaim, to spread through all the earth abroad the honors of Thy name.” He found Jesus’ name “charms our fears” and “bids our sorrows cease.” It was “life and health and peace.”

Are you overwhelmed with problems or worries? Consider all God has done for you. Jesus died that you might be forgiven and have eternal life. He sent His Spirit to empower and guide you. He has a plan for you and promises to provide for your needs.

As Charles Wesley wrote, “He breaks the power of canceled sin, He sets the prisoner free; His blood can make the foulest clean, His blood availed for me.” You can have that freedom right now.
