Fighting Dependency

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

“Fighting Dependency” reminds us that the world seeks to keep us reliant on it, but true strength comes from trusting God’s provision and power.

“No blacksmith could be found in … Israel, because the Philistines said, ‘Otherwise the Hebrews will make swords or spears.’ […] On the day of battle … neither sword nor spear was found in the hands of any … who were with Saul and Jonathan.”1 Samuel 13:19, 22 NASB

The Philistines were determined to control God’s people, limit their influence, and prevent them from having victory or success, so they took action to keep them dependent.

First, they denied Israel access to resources. Then they applied economic restrictions, keeping prices low for Israel’s goods and services. Because of these controls, the blacksmiths in Israel could not survive financially. As a result, Israel did not have the weapons they needed to fight in battle, and they remained dependent.

The world has employed these same tactics repeatedly throughout the generations. The kingdoms of this world don’t want to be challenged, their power base threatened, or questioned on their way of life. They want to grow and maintain their influence and make people dependent on them.

How should we respond? We must start with a total commitment to God and His Kingdom, basing our lives on His Word and living a life of faith. We must be willing to stand up to pressure and reject compromise, confident that He is with us in every situation.

Don’t allow worldly philosophies and pressures to shape your thoughts or control your life (Romans 12:2). Renew your dedication to seek first God’s Kingdom. Commit your needs to Him and be filled with His Spirit.

Declare that Jesus is your Lord. He has promised to be with you always. Be ready and willing to step out in faith to battle for your destiny!

Reflection Question: In what areas do you need to rely more on God instead of the world?

Prayer
Holy Spirit, I look to You as my source, and I commit my needs to You. Thank You for providing the resources I need! In Jesus’ name, amen.
