Festus

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Unlike Festus, who prioritized power and position, Paul stayed focused on his mission—reminding us to pursue eternal purpose over fleeting influence.

“Festus then, after arriving in the province, went up to Jerusalem from Caesarea three days later [ … ] when Festus had conferred with his council, he answered, ‘ You have appealed to Caesar, to Caesar you shall go.’”—Acts 25:1–12 NASB

Paul’s case was one of the first issues Festus faced as governor. Jewish leaders lobbied for Paul to be brought to Jerusalem, hoping to ambush him. But Festus wanted to hear Paul for himself. During that hearing, Paul defended himself. Knowing his rights as a Roman citizen, Paul appealed to Caesar, and Festus had no choice but to grant his request.

When King Agrippa II and his wife arrived in Caesarea, Festus briefed them on Paul’s case. Agrippa asked to hear Paul in person. As Paul presented his case, Festus interrupted him, loudly declaring that Paul was out of his mind: “Your great learning is driving you insane” (Acts 26:24). Festus and Agrippa concluded that Paul could have been set free if he had not appealed to Caesar.

Festus thought like people in the world. Yet Paul knew that God had “chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise” (1 Corinthians 1:27). He wasn’t concerned about his career, personal freedom, or wealth. Instead, he focused on taking the Gospel to Rome.

Men like Festus come and go. For a season, they gain power, wealth, and honors, but they soon are gone, replaced by someone else, rewards faded. In contrast, those like Paul, who focus on serving God, receive rewards that will never tarnish or fade.

Today, follow Paul’s example. Focus on serving Jesus and receiving rewards that last into eternity.

Reflection Question: Am I more concerned with pleasing people or fulfilling God’s calling?
