Faithful and Victorious

Oppressed by the Canaanites, Israel cried out to God for help and experienced a great victory under the direction of Deborah and Barak (Judges 4). They celebrated this victory with a mighty song. But what was the first thing they sang about? They were most grateful “that the leaders led in Israel, that the people volunteered.” They realized Israel had success and was blessed by God because everyone contributed. Everyone had a role to play, and everyone did their part.

The Bible consistently teaches the importance of individual faithfulness and discovering God’s unique calling for our lives. In the New Testament, the focus was on the Body of Christ—the Church. In Ephesians 4, Paul stressed that each person is given grace “according to the measure of Christ’s gift.” Special leaders were given, not to draw attention to themselves, but “for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.”

The Church had maximum impact and growth when each person fulfilled his or her God-ordained function. This also was a key for each person to receive maximum blessings and maturity.

We see these principles at work in the victory experienced by Israel under Deborah and Barak: The leaders led…the people followed. Everyone served together. And there was victory.

Today, remember that you are an important part of the Body of Christ. God loves you and has a special plan for your life. Use the talents you’ve been given. Serve Him. Reach out to others. Be faithful.
